The rush of “The End”

Hi everyone!

Until I finished writing my first novel, I had no idea of the adrenaline rush you could get from typing two magical words.

“The End”

So much work goes into earning the opportunity to type those two simple words! Wow! Hours and hours of typing in front of the computer, gnashing your teeth when you lose the tension in the middle, racking your brain for a way to write yourself out of the corner you just created, and cruising through the thesaurus to find another word for “looked” since you just noticed you used it 4 times in the last paragraph.

Not to mention those days when you look over what you wrote and completely lose all confidence in your ability to tell a story. (Oh I hope I’m not the only one who has those days! LOL)

This is part of what makes writer friends a precious gift. Only another writer understands when you look at them with a wild gleam in your eyes and say, “I think I’m going to hit the end today.”

Only another writer can relate when you tell them you've only slept 4 hours in the past twenty because you couldn’t pull yourself away from the keyboard during the final push to tie up all the loose ends of your plot in an effort to type those two beautiful words…

I’m super happy to report that I reached “The End” of my novella, Night Thief, tonight!!! WOOT!!!

And now I’m too fired up to sleep! LOL Ah well…

Thanks for understanding!!! And may you all reach your own “The End”s soon…. :)

  1. Congrats, Lisa--doesn't it feel great?! And believe me, you aren't the only one who hits a big crisis of doubt midstream. There are at least two of us in that club :-)

  2. Thanks Suzanne!!! :)

And I'm SO glad I'm not the only one who has moments of neurotic, "Why did I ever think I could do this" moments... LOL

I guess that's why writers need to stick together, right? We need a support group! LOL

  3. Woo-hoo, huge congrats! I'm dying to type those words with my current WIP, but sadly, it looks as though I'm months away, lol. Hope you enjoy a nice little break before starting up again. :-)

    1. Thanks Rosalie! :)

I might get a couple days to rest, but my Night Demon edits should hit my mailbox this weekend and then it's back to the races! LOL

Good luck with your work in progress!!! I hope it flows quickly for you!

  4. I just typed THE END on my book last Friday. Then printed the whole thing out and went over it with an editor's eye. So this last Wednesday night I finally hit SEND, and got it off to my editor. I can totally, completely relate to the so-called HAPPY DANCE. Boy, finishing on time, and even early, is such sweetness. But now- off and running on the next one already. No rest for the wicked, or the writer. hehehehe.

Here's to WRITING! Big yay. I love love love it.

  5. Hi, Lisa. Not long ago, I put The End to my first draft of my short story. It felt good to know it was done and this story made me very happy. Two critiques later, I'm still tweaking. So I'll say Mostly Done. LOL

    1. That's great Vicki!!!

You made it farther than most people ever will!!! Getting to the end is the first major hurdle...

As Nora Roberts says "I can fix anything but a blank page..."

      Congrats on The End! :)

      Thanks for commenting!

  7. I agree. "The End" are two of the sweetest AND the most terrifying words of a writer's vocabulary because as soon as you type "The End" your Muse elbows you in the ribs and says, "Did I ever tell you the one about..." And it starts all over again! So, I raise my glass in a cyber-toast to you! May we always be blessed with the rush of "The End" and the anticipation of "Chapter One".

    :-)

    1. Ha! That's so true Maeve!!! We climb that huge mountain, and then we race out and do it again! LOL

      We must be crazy right?

But there's no better feeling than finally reaching that Happily Ever After, is there? :)

      Thanks for commenting!

  8. I love that feeling! It's like you just climbed the biggest mountain and now get to slide down (because the, "I have to edit this thing" moment hasn't hit yet ;)). It's the best feeling ever! Congrats on another project finished- woot!
