Goodies & Swag

Hi everyone –

This is going to be a busy March for me… I have 3 different blog hops! Yikes!

As an author, I have a blast during blog hops! I usually meet a few new readers, gain lots of new newsletter and blog subscribers, and give away prizes…

It’s the prizes I wanted to chat about…

I participated in a small author blog hop (with a couple of authors from Castles & Guns too!) and a few have sent me some swag to include with our grand prize new kindle.

One of them made the coolest key chain from a shrinky-dink of her book cover…. GENIUS!!! I love shrink-dinks! How did I not know you could print them and shrink them???

Anyway, it made me wonder what other cool things I’m missing out of… Have you ever made or received some really cool author swag items? What were they and why did you love them?

I can’t wait to hear…

Thanks for helping a girl out! LOL

  1. LOL--I'll be watching your answers too, Lisa! Some of the things I've gotten that were cool and different included little handmade soaps wrapped in book-related goodies. Recipe cards that tied in with the characters/theme of a book. Excerpt booklets (although I've priced these and they're ridiculous). A reader sent me a necklace he'd made--shrinking my book cover using shrinky dinks and turning it into a pendant, then stringing it with wooden beads. Coolest thing ever, but labor-intensive.

For my upcoming signings, I'm making gemstone bracelets. My character uses magic-infused gemstones in a lot of her charms and spells, so I ordered a pile of inexpensive gemstone beads and some stretchy cord. I'm putting them in small bags with a card that tells the magical properties of the gemstone. We'll see how that goes over!

    1. The gemstones sounds very cool Suzanne!!! WIll it have a tab with your book title or something too?

Maybe a fabulous shrinky dink??? (I have got to try those!!! :)

Thanks for commenting! Good luck with the book signings too!!! Have fun!

  2. All great ideas above! But, I think the coolest thing I've ever gotten from an author was a really good book. You know, the kind that you can't put down, and that immediately causes you to pray they have a series that's already published!
Of course, I did really like the signed book cover with excerpt swag I received, too :)

    1. Hi JA -

I agree a great book is always the best swag! LOL

So by a signed cover, do you mean a "cover flat"? Like the front and back cover but flat without a book inside...

  4. Hey, Lisa! Thanks again for putting together the most recent blog hop. :)

My most favorite swag item is a handmade beaded bracelet that says "I Love Ghosts" from Marley Gibson. So cute! And I do wear it.

  6. The most unusual item I have received was a pass to a convention was in the story written by the author. I really enjoyed getting that. I've gotten candy wax vampire teeth. I've gotten button pins to wear. At one book signing I got cup cakes and a note pad. I've gotten lip baum and writing pen. My favorite of all is getting the author signature and my photo with the author.

  7. I have never received anything from a blog, but wished a lot for an amazon gift card. I have like 10 writing books to buy at my amazon cart.

    1. From a reader's point of view I think pens are at the top of my lists but they really aren't unusual. I have gotten tiny flashlights which I use daily as I use it to find my way to the bathroom at nights and this way I do not wake anyone up. I have gotten keychains that I like too. susan L garysue@dejazzd.com

    2. Hi Adila -

Amazon gift cards are great prizes from blogs, especially if the winner uses part of it to purchase the author's books! :)

    3. Hi Susan -

Pens are definitely useful, but I wonder how effective they are... Have you ever visited the author's website on a pen? (Inquiring minds want to know... LOL)

I think I might try a shrinky dink keychain for my book cover... Might be fun!

  8. Have you seen the "shrinky dink" (*giggle every time I read it*) wineglass charms? I don't remember which author I saw with them, but I thought it was a really cool idea, especially for people that belong to book clubs.
I also love my book/author Koozies (for cans or water bottles). I never leave home without one & I've actually had people ask me about them, which is a great lead in to..."OMG...you have got to read this book!".

Dude could you imagine how hot your soda can would look with Night Walker abs around it? LOL Koozies is a great idea! :)

  9. I love pens :) I also like bookmarks but not just "I printed my book cover on a bookmark and printed my contact info on the back" kind of bookmark... I love bookmarks with creativity splashed into it. For example, when I won the book Possess by Gretchen McNeil, the bookmark that came with it was plain if not for the cute little thing attached to it. It's hard to explain but anything that might look like this- personalized - would be great: http://www.google.com/imgres?start=96&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&biw=1366&bih=667&authuser=0&tbm=isch&tbnid=jyJM_dGf3MDPgM:&imgrefurl=http://www.fictionators.com/review/the-night-circus-by-erin-morgenstern/&docid=5b7NPig_lX2UwM&imgurl=http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a86/Kassiah/TF/Giveaways/tncbookmark.jpg&w=486&h=720&ei=dVBYT5OnCbLoiALRg5W1Cw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=427&vpy=182&dur=1176&hovh=273&hovw=184&tx=112&ty=154&sig=103487040838648630220&page=5&tbnh=151&tbnw=102&ndsp=25&ved=1t:429,r:14,s:96

    1. That's a beautiful bookmark Arianne!!! Wow!!!

I use an eReader now so I forget about bookmarks... It's a great idea!

  10. I love things that tie-in with the books you write. For example, Gabi Stevens gave a cute magic wand away at RomCon. Since her series is about fairy godmothers, it made sense. It's a fun little gift that ties into the books, but is also cost-effective.

I do second the signed cover flats and creative bookmarks, though. I got a bookmark from Jacquelyn Frank that is folded in half with magnets on either side so it won't fall out of the book.
