Characters You Love to Hate

I read books everyday, almost all day. After all I work as an editor so it is kind of my job. That and I have a serious addiction to all things book related, so when I’m not working and I’m relaxing on the couch chances are I have a book in my hands.
Lately I have started to realize how much I enjoy characters in a book that I hate! It sounds bizarre, but I really do. Of course I am a huge fan of the main characters, but I also love the character that challenges the heroine and is that mean girl we have all experienced at some point in our lives. I love when authors have these great descriptions of the “mean girl” and being able to totally visualize them in my head. I love it even more when the mean girl gets it in the end!
And then of course there are the love triangles. Let’s face it, when you pick up a book that has a love triangle in it, you pull for one character more than the other. And if you are anything like me, if the love triangle goes on for more than one book, the more I like the other option less. But even though I love one option more than the other (and often start to really not like the other option), I still enjoy the suspense of it all. I love the not knowing who the heroine is going to end up with, and even when the guy I like doesn’t get the girl in the end, I love the journey. And part of that journey is the character I love to hate.
So I figured I would give you an examples of these characters for me. Rachel Vincent’s Shifters series really stands out for me. Faythe has this whole will she or won’t she thing going for her through the series, will she take the plunge and be with Marc, or is she going to end up with Jace. For me I love Jace. I have no idea why but I did not take to Marc at all. He was the safe bet, but Jace... Jace was exciting and new and potentially could bring a lot of turmoil but I loved him. And the more Marc kept popping up and being more and more of an option the less I liked him. I was actually kind of glad when he was separated from everyone (I’m not totally heartless I cared that he was in a crappy situation, but still was pulling for Jace). Literally up until the very last moment of the series, I was always on the Jace team and wanted her to end up with him. And if you haven’t read the series I won’t spoil it for you, but I will say that the way Vincent ended the series made me completely happy with how she closed out the series, I genuinely felt that the characters all ended up where they were suppose to. But I loved the journey and being on that journey with them until the end.
So what about you guys, any characters you love to hate in your favorite books?

  1. Isn't that being attracted to the bad boys? Our daddies always warned us about them . . .
