What is the Role of the Library?

Entering the local branch of the county library, I smiled as I passed a display of romance novels—Valentine day is a few days away.

With all the innovations in technology, what is the role of today's library?

The doors opened twenty minutes ago, and already the library is busy. Few people roam the racks of print books. I haven't done that in years. I usually search for my research material on-line from the convenience of my home office, place what I need on hold, drive by, and pick up the books to use at home.

Rows of computers are humming. As are many personal laptops. That is why I visited the library today. To use their wifi while I wait for internet connectivity to be installed at my new house.

The racks of audio books have been expanded and are quite popular. More so, the racks of DVDs.

The role of the library in the community has evolved over the years. Our library offers services needed in these changing times. Education and career development, technology workshops, and other workshops on subjects as broad as genealogy and grant writing. There are eReaders to try.

Entertainment is included in the list of services. I recently attended a show presented by a Mark Twain impersonator. Reading groups meet to discuss books. Local artists display their works in the gallery. The list goes on.

There are computers in the children's center too. Other than that advancement, the large, colorful room reminds me of the library I visited as a youth—a place to inspire.

Have you visited a library lately? What services have you used?

Happy reading!

  1. Oh my goodness, I have NOT visited a library in years. I'm actually ashamed to start counting how many years...

It sounds wonderful that they've found ways to keep the community still involved. The workshops are great as well as the wifi and even eReaders???? love it!

    1. Hi, S.K. Not all libraries are created equal, though many libraries have terrific services. Check out your local library, you might have a pleasant surprise. :)

  2. My mother was a libriarian. I loved getting books and keeping them as long as I wanted (no late penalities).
